Setup your Kmail client software for gmail in Linux (For KDE users)

Kmail is a freeware software mostly installed with kde desktops with many Linux distros.
Its quite easy to use and configure.
In this post, i am going to write a simple tutorial that howto setup your Kmail software for gmail.
1st of all, if you did not configure your gmail account settings for POP and smtp. i will show you how?
1- Login to your gmail account.

2- Click on settting link there.

3- Select Forwarding and POP/IMAP from the setting menu.

4- In POP download area, select "Enable POP for all mail". The rest are optional and totally upto you, that you want to configure or not.

5- Save the changes and logout.

Now open your Kmail client software.
1- Click on settings tab from the menu.

2- Select configure Kmail.

3- Choose accounts from the left side menu.

4- On the recieving tab click on Add button.

5- A popup menu will appear, select an option there. As we setup gmail as POP, so select POP3 there and click OK.

6- In the General tab, Enter your account name.

  • In the host input box write "pop.gmail.com". i use quotes,write it without quotes there.
  • Dont choose port yet.
  • Enter your login and password.
  • The rest of option are upto you, either you want to store password or not, mostly not.

7- In Advance tab, all are optional.upto your settings you can configure.

8- Goto Security tab.

  • In encryption select "Use SSL for secure mail forward".
  • OR you can check it by clicking on the button "Check what the server supports ".
  • While clicking on that button, it will automatically configure the port for the gmail.
  • Click OK.
  • And thats it.

9- Now choose sending tab. click on Add button

10- In General tab:

  • Choose a name for your account.
  • In host input box put "smtp.gmail.com".
  • And click on the button below "Check what the server supports".

11- In Advance tab, just enter your login and passwod.

12- Click ok to finish.

13- Click on Apply button to save the changes. and then Ok to finish and close the window.

So now your Kmail is configured for recieving OFFLINE mails.

Just click on the button in Kmail "Check Mail" under main menu. it will update the mail box.

How easy, isn't it. Hope so.
